With a strong foundation in both traditional finance and crypto, McClurg brings considerable expertise in navigating the evolving landscape of digital assets. Prior to Canary Capital, McClurg was the co-founder and Chief Investment Officer of Valkyrie Funds, which was acquired by CoinShares, a leading European alternative asset manager specializing in digital assets, in the spring of 2024. At Valkyrie, Steven was instrumental in launching one of the first Spot Bitcoin ETFs in the U.S. and served as the lead portfolio manager on the Valkyrie Bitcoin Miners ETF (WGMI), the top-performing ETF of 2023 and one of the few actively managed funds focused on the public bitcoin mining ecosystem. McClurg's extensive background includes his time as a Managing Director at Guggenheim Partners, where he managed portfolio construction and strategy for fixed income and private equity funds. Additionally, he founded Theseus Capital, a blockchain-powered asset management platform, which was later acquired by Galaxy Digital, where he continued as Managing Director, building their asset management and public funds businesses. McClurg also co-founded Paydrop, a payments company, and has held leadership roles at technology firms such as Electronic Arts and Crowdfunder. He holds a Master of Science and an MBA from Pepperdine University, where he has also served as an adjunct professor.
